"In-ear" monitoring was developed for professional musicians. If you attend live concerts or watch live music on TV you can't help but have noticed the improvement in sound quality over the past ten years. Before in ear monitoring each musician in the band relied on their own personal mix in a wedge loudspeaker placed on the floor in front of them. However, as the gig rolled on the singer would ask for more volume, then the guitarist, bassist and on it went until the stage foldback sound was so loud it spilled into the audience making it difficult for the front of house sound engineer to get a nicely balanced sound for the paying audience.

iPhone arrives in UK the day after tomorrow

Probably the most eagerly anticipated gadget of the modern age will hit the UK streets on Friday 9 November. Apple sold 270,000 iPhones in the first two days of its USA launch. Here, Apple UK, Carphone Warehouse and network operator O2 are looking forward to a bumper Christmas as gadget geeks and the style conscious get their hands on Apple's latest miracle.

If you haven't seen any pictures of the new iPhone since it was launched by Steve Jobs in the USA you must have just dropped in from Mars. Once again Apple does not compromise between style and functionality. The phone looks just great and dare I say it, similar to Sony's PSP? (allegedly). But it's when in use that the iPhone really sets itself apart from the competition. The most striking difference to a standard handset is the apparent lack of a keypad, with almost the entire fascia given over to the touchscreen. All of the 17 different applications are accessed from here including guess what, making a call (duh!) to viewing photos, listening to music files, checking emails and surfing the net.

The all conquering iPod has become the generic term for MP3 players with some serious electronics conglomerates left way behind in it's wake - however, with Apple signing an exclusive deal with O2 it will be interesting to see if they can repeat their iPod success in the phone market - I'm sure the next few months will tell us how loyal Britain's mobile phone users are to their network operators.

Apple this morning added a twist to its iPod shuffle range, introducing four new coloured models of the diminutive device.
The move means iPod shuffle's are now available in blue, pink, green, orange and the original silver.

"iPod shuffle is the world's most wearable digital music player," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing. "Music fans can now choose iPod shuffle in one of five brilliant colours, or they can buy one of each."
The 1GB flash-based iPod shuffle is half a cubic inch in volume, weighs half an ounce and carries a built-in clip. It offers up to 12 hours of battery life. The price remains the same: £55, including VAT.

Retailing in 21st Century United Kingdom

The UK retail sector is currently undergoing possibly the biggest transition period since retailing began. Everywhere we look in the media we see the headlines of 50% rises in online spending and another high street chain closing due to a fall in sales. Since the arrival of Sunday trading in the UK there has been an upward shift in rents for retail units and combined with a stronger retail sector post Millennium the result has been an enormous increase in rates over the past 5 years leading many retailers to shut up shop as they simply can’t be profitable any more. On the one hand shopping centers will want to maximize their revenue as they are a business and businesses seek to maximize their profits but do we not have a duty to at least support shops in the high street.

Nobody would like to see a situation whereby they are forced to purchase some goods online as they simply can’t purchase them on the high street as they were unprofitable for the retailer in question. We also have a situation where many online businesses are yet to return a profit on their operation yet this is not pointed out by many in the media. The Internet is most certainly a good thing, it opens up avenues of price competition like we have never seen before and it also gives people incredible choice but the ability to be able to go and try some jeans on or get consumer electronics advice from a specialist retailer is something that we should all be keen to keep at our disposal.

Shops are also having to look at their margins and say that whereas before when their rents and to a lesser extent labour costs were lower they could get by no problem on 40% margin now they simply can’t operate at those levels and so we are seeing an enormous increase In the number of own brand chain stores who produce their own clothes often in the developing world and sell them through their own stores in order to make larger profit margins and keep their businesses profitable. For the consumer who wishes to buy recognized brand and have a large selection at their disposal this is certainly not a good situation to be in. It also makes it harder for the new entrepreneur entering the retail sector who wishes to provide a nice ambience in which to shop combined with good servie and good price selling brand names, he may find it impossible to make enough to survive let alone build a successful retail group.

It will be interesting over the next 5 year to see how the UK retail sector goes, will we see the high turnover of tenants that we currently see with new shops coming or going or will we see a relaxation in the growth of rates perhaps allowing retailers to catch up and start to be more stable and profit making, it will certainly be an interesting emergence to watch!

How Much of a Threat is the Zune to the iPod

The Apple iPod recently celebrated its 5th birthday at a time not long after during the summer there was a slight worry that uptake of iPods was slower than expected and was slowing down in general. Then along came Apple to announce the 2nd Generation iPods Nano and the upgraded iPod Video plus incredibly small new Shuffle. We were all aware that MicroSoft were developing the Zune hoping for it to rival and take over the enormous market share in MP3 players that Apple currently enjoy. But are there any reasons to purchase a Zune over an iPod?

Well at first glance it would appear not. The capacity is the same as the lower model iPod Video at 30GB, there is a video screen much like the Video iPod. So what is so different that will convinced buyers looking at the two and deciding what to buy that the Zune is the better choice.
For a start a big part of the Zune is that it has wireless sharing capabilities allowing you to send your music to another Zune and download without connecting cables this is a massive bonus for fellow Zune owners who want to share tracks and video footage and also Microsoft in the USA have introduced unlimited downloads for just $14.99 a month something that Apple are yet to introduce for their users of iTunes.

The Zune also comes with an excellent portrait mode allowing you to turn your Zune sideways and watch video swith an image and picture more conducive to easy viewing something that Apple iPod Users have lng been calling for. Add to all these positives the fact that the Zune comes with a built in FM Radio and suddenly it is starting to look like a serious competitor next to the Video iPod after all!

Been very busy but have written a hopefully helpful article for my readers on selecting your iPod speakers, enjoy!

More and more people are purchasing a set of speakers for their iPods, some to replace their current home audio set ups in order to get rid of the cd collections that take up so much room, some to have a portable audio source for when they are away on holiday, some just for having some iPod speakers because everyone else is buying them! One of the problems we come across the most is people being faced with a huge selection of choices and feeling bewildered about what to buy. What I am aim to do is make your choice that little bit easier.

We can break down the different sets of speakers into the following categories:

Portable and powered by batteries.

Portable and powered by mains adapter.

Home Set up powered by mains adapter.

For those of you looking for a portable set that is powered by batteries there are a variety of excellent options at varying prices. Personally I am of the belief that whatever amount of money you are spending it is important that sound quality is pretty good as what use is a light speaker set that has crackily sound! If you are looking to spend under £50 then we highly rate both the Logic 3 i-Station 7 and the Monster iSpeaker. Both of these are very light to carry, are of a size very conveninet for putting ina backpack or suitcase and run for a good amount of time on batteries, sound from both is exceptional for this pricepoint with great clarity.

If you are looking to spend a little more then a lot of options open up in the £50 to £150 bracket. If lightweight is your number one problem then you will not go far wrong with the JBL On Tour, this is an incredibly lightweight unit that what it lacks in bass it makes up for in the sound clarity department. If you would prefer better sound quality then a step up to an Altec Lansing IM5 or Logitech MM50, Saitek A250 and for iPod Nano Owners the XtremeMac MicroBlast. All of these provide excellent sound alongside good looks and a highly portable structure. Once your budget is going over £150 you are in to the realms of a great portable system in the Altec Lansing IM7, thumping bass, crystal clear treble and a great portable structure, definetly the daddy of portable iPod Docking Stations and Speaker units.

If you would like something that can be considered portable but don't mind having to use a mains charger then there are a couple of good options available. One of our favourites is the Macally IceTune, this is indeed one of our top 5 iPod accessories altogether, when stacked up it looks like a coke can and has two separate speakers that can be removed and pointed to send sounds in different directions, the sound quality is excelletn for only £39.99 and it is very much portable but does require mains power. The JBL On Stage is another wonderful compact and lightweight unit that can be plugged into the mains for power and will charge your iPod while you listen to it, very high quality sound, lacks bass a littel but you are compromising bass to have such a small portable unit, clarity of sound and loudness are both very impressive. Another excellent unit in this bracket is the Logic 3 iStation 8, newly released and keeping up the fabulous reputation of the iStation 7 this really is worth the money, great combinations of bass and treble and very much a portable size and weight.

For the home set up there are a variety of options and in honesty the best value speakers in our opinion come at this price point. For just £59.99 you can have a pair of JBL Creature II's, these are surely one of the greatest home electronics products to ever hit the market, the bass is phenomenal and the clarity is superb, vocals sound great for many types of music, they also look very appealing and are bound to interest visitors who glaze their eyes upon them! Also in the JBL range are the Encounters, these expand on the Creature philosophy of an alien themed set of speakers and have even stronger bass, they are quite simply phenomenal! At this price point we also have the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks, for a long time these have been my individual favourite speakers, they are see through so you can have a look at what is going on inside and provide possibly the clearest vocals you will hear from iPod focused speakers they are simply outstanding, perhaps not as strong bass as the Encounters but still more than enough for most pallettes. For anyone considering a home iPod set up I strongly suggest a very close look at the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks they are oustanding and will fit in to 99% of home settings in the living room, dining room, kitchen etc!

A nice new bit of kit from Belkin is the Sport's Jacket 3 pack kit for the iPod Nano, basically a sport's armband for listening to your Nano while excercising, it has 3 silicone skins to fit the band so you can change colour to suit your mood, see colour selection on the left.

Also new in is the Belkin Holster Case for the 5G iPod, a remarkably high quality leather for such a great value case, this one really is for the Video iPod owners who appreciate good materials in their iPod case.

It has been a busy week at www.mp3additions.co.uk what with new products coming out and lots of orders. Few nice things in stock to tell you about. Firstly, we now have the XtremeMac Tuffwrap Accents for the Video iPod, these sell really well for the iPod Nano and are now available in three colour schemes for the 5G/Video iPod. Also new in are Altec Lansing IM9 and Altec Lansing IM5, both are superb docking stations and speaker units with the IM9 pictured above complete with included carry case for carrying your docking station/speaker unit. Cygnett have brought out some superb FM Transmitters that also act as car seats for your iPod as well as an in car charger all at superb prices and cheaper with MP3 Additions than other online retailers. The Sennheiser Sport range are now in full swing and flying out of our warehouse, customers just can not get enough of them and we don't blame them, my pick of the bunch is the PMX70 absolutely superb headphones from our friends at Sennheiser. It's been a long week and long weekend so must say adios!

Has been an enjoyable weekend, managed to fit ina party Saturday ngiht and a good drink up, either side of that was spent checking out which products already released for the Nano would continue to fit the modernised iPod Nano in its new Aluminum casing and luckily the majority of products will still work with the new nano. This week has been busy for MP3 Additions, lots of customers to keep happy and in turn keep me happy. There is nothing more satisfying than someone telling you they are delighted with the effort you put in to make sure they got their order next day and that they are realyl happy with their new iPod case or new set of speakers.

Apple this week made announcements about the progress of the iPod and I must say the new Shuffle looks superb, super small, literally smaller than a matchbox now and only 15 grams in weight, also delighted to see the Nano taking on the role of the iPod Mini being offered ina variety of colours, new Aluminum casing should keep those nasty scratches away that plagued the first generation iPod Nano. The iPod Video update was not so impressive with the 80GB model and a 60% brighter screen, I think they are holding off on full screen video capabilites until the big one next year which may include mobile phone usage, who knows??!!!!!!!

My girlfriend has come down with a nasty case of tonsilitus so please wish her better, don't want to not be able to see her over the weekend, would miss her dearly already do, think she deserves a nice set of speakers for Christmas, I am giving her a set of Sennheiser sport headphones when I see her but she does not know that!

Must be off to bed now, been a long day, ever so grateful for the weekend but already got a mountain of orders to be packed ready for Monday morning dispatch, look forward to hopefully updating this blog over the weekend, meanwhile I leave you with a picture of my now favourite headphones, go on yo Sennheiser!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Decent day today, lots of orders and putting together some nice ideas for the Christmas period. Considering doing a stand at Mac Expo in London, would be interested for feedback from anyone considering going to Mac Expo, would you be intersted in buying some iPod accessories there? Hi and welcome to my BLOG about my business and my life. Hoepfully it will be of some interest to some people out there either setting up their own online business or just loving reading about my day to day goings on!

www.mp3additions.co.uk is fully up and running now and is already taking a far larger slice of my life than I expected, up at 3:30am blogging after being up at 8am the day before, up at 8am in a few hours, started the site with the pursuit of selling iPod accessories as I love to accessorize my iPod and wanted to provide customer service I would want as a customer(which I did not get mostly when shopping online). Get the occassional ratty customer but the hundreds of kind and polite ones more than make up for it. Getting ready for a busy Christmas handing my life over to packaging orders 10 hours a day but it's life, the girlfriend will have to be patient hoepfuly wil get time for Christmas dinner.

Have had some excellent new stuff in recently, waterproof iPod cases that I literally waited months to come into the country, well worth the wait, look good adn do as they say on the tin, lso got a tasty new dock from Logic 3. Am arranging to get a few more luxury cases in for the Christmas season and a couple of surprises up my sleeve for the site, full time member of staff also joining soon.

Definetly time to hit the sack, look forward to letting you know how today was when I type this around the same time tomorrow.
